History

Preserving what historically remains and changing with the new

Origin

During the Sengoku Period (Warring States Period from the late 15th to late 16th century), gold was mined at the area’s Fuji Gold Mine (Fumoto Gold Mine). The ancestors of the Takekawa family that runs Fumotoppara Inc. today were fully responsible for managing the mine. After a landslide devastated the gold mine, our forefathers started transforming the mountain into a beautiful forest starting in the Meiji era (from 1868).

Forestry

Fumotoppara Inc. was founded in 2005.
With forestry as our main business, we share the splendor of nature and excellence of Japanese wood through timber production, use of wood energy, agriculture, gibier wild game, and campsite operation using the forest environment. We live with the mountains and give back to them. That is how Fumotoppara strives to achieve healthy, beautiful land at the foot of the mountain.

Today

This land was used as a farm for the Tokyo University of Agriculture for about 70 years until it was returned to the Takekawa family in 2005.
The cowshed built at the time remains as a shop today. Gold ore crushers and other equipment said to have been used for gold mining also exist to this day. This is because we want to preserve the history of this land. We want to keep being reminded how the land is in its current state through ages of transformation since the gold mining days as we protect the land as it goes through its cycles.

Protecting the Natural Environment

It all starts with forestry. Bountiful mountains nurtured and protected with forestry at the root

Forestry
Forest preservation & circulation

To create and nurture bountiful mountains, Fumotoppara fully manages our forests from planting to harvesting. For about 15 years after planting, trees are maintained by clearing undergrowth, pruning, and thinning, and after about 20 to 30 years, the forest is thinned. Thinning allows sunlight to enter the forest, creating a healthy forest environment.
The wood from thinning is put to effective use, sold as firewood and charcoal at our campsite and used in buildings on our property.
Then, trees are regrown over 50 years and harvested after which the ground is prepared before replanting. These activities are repeated to maintain a healthy mountain and forest.

Human Resource Development
Mountain trail maintenance

At Fumotoppara, we support the Green Employment (midori no koyo) human resource development project.
We nurture successors to forestry by implementing a three-year curriculum for acquiring qualifications to perform basic forestry work.
Maintaining mountain trails for transporting trees cut down by thinning and harvesting is another important job we do for forestry.

Charcoal Kiln
Firewood boiler

Thinned trees are burned in a charcoal kiln and sold as Fumotoppara charcoal at our campsite. Small scraps that are difficult to process into charcoal and firewood in addition to used charcoal and firewood collected from campsite guests are used as energy sources for the firewood boiler installed in 2018 to generate heat for campsite guests.

Furniture

FUMOTO TREE’S is an original brand of furniture and sundry goods made from Fumotoppara wood. We carefully make various items such as tables and chairs that can be used at home as well as cutting boards that can be used at camp. We hope to bring a piece of Fumotoppara to your home.

Livestock
Hunting & wild game

Overpopulation of sika deer is currently a serious problem in Japan. An increased population of sika deer can cause damage to the forestry, agriculture, and livestock industries as the deer eat seedlings and peel off tree barks, not to mention traffic accidents caused by the deer jumping out onto roads.
For this reason, Fumotoppara has established a sika deer processing facility to promote the effective use of sika deer in cooperation with the local hunting club.

Agriculture

With the cooperation of local farmers (and aiming for self-sufficient rural living), we grow over 20 varieties of vegetables on our private farm.
Vegetables grown in Fumotoppara are sold at the Kanayama Terrace and our shop in hopes that everyone can feel the season in the foods they eat and the freshness of vegetables picked in the morning.

Providing Safe, Reliable Food

Aiming for local production for local consumption, we offer food that makes the most of seasonal local ingredients.

Kanayama Terrace

Kanayama Terrace, our dining hall on the campsite, offers original menus using carefully selected ingredients such as local seasonal vegetables and wild game from the Asagiri Plateau.
We regularly add new items so that everyone from children to adults can enjoy our menu and local ingredients.

Shop

At our shop, we sell firewood, charcoal, and other equipment necessary for camping, as well as Fumotoppara original goods and local beer.
We also sell fresh ingredients such as our farm-grown vegetables harvested in the morning and gibier wild game meat from the Asagiri Plateau for campsite visitors to cook and enjoy.

Our Ingredients Processing plant, wild game, delivered cow

Asagiri Plateau gibier wild game (venison) is the meat of sika deer that inhabit the area around Fumotoppara. At the venison processing facility on the premises of Fumotoppara, venison is carefully processed to remove the gamey taste.
Free-range pigs are raised in the rich natural environment of the Asagiri Plateau in a stress-free environment where they can breathe clean air, drink clean water, dig up the soil, and eat plants. Pastured pork is characterized by good fragrance and sweet fat.
A delivered cow is a cow that has given birth. At Fumotoppara, delivered cows raised in good health in a stress-free grazing environment are processed, cooked, and sold as meat.

Local Ties

Acting as a liaison with the community, protecting nature, and creating opportunities for learning

Employment
Generational cycle cafeteria, leather products, farm, forestry

We outsource our private farm’s management and production to the local people and employ local workers in the Kanayama Terrace kitchen.
While supporting Fumotoppara operations in this way, the local community also shares their wisdom, including recipes using local ingredients, and together we hope to achieve local production for local consumption. Finally, the booth attached to Kanayama Terrace sells deer leather products made by local craftsmen.

Education
Nature experience

We offer hands-on learning experiences, such as cutting trees at summer camp for elementary, junior high, and high school students. For children’s learning, we grow not only old trees but also young trees that are skinny and easy to handle.
The purpose of this event is to have children experience forestry, which lies at the foundation of living. We hope to cultivate a spirit of forest and mountain preservation by giving children a feeling of being connected with nature.

Volunteer Event Forest of Learning

At Fumotoppara, we hold an event called Forest of Learning (Manabi no Mori).
The content of the experience varies each time, but we offer activities that allow children to actively experience forestry, such as cutting down trees and making goods using the felled timber. The event offers an experience of living in harmony with nature, such as harvesting vegetables grown at our farm and cooking with those ingredients.
